Team Inferno: Chris, Sidney, Dan, and Jack (Sidney, incidentally, ran the 400 m. in 65 seconds)
We had the privilege of spending a day in Steven’s Point, WI, site of the Special Olympics Wisconsin State Summer Games.
‘Uncle Chris’ was competing in the 200 m. dash, the 4×200 m. relay, and the 100 m. dash. We were delayed a bit — once outside Osseo, WI (here’s a shout out to the friendly police officer who alerted us to our speed on that unbelievably flat and straight road) and one by my odd 10 a.m. craving for fast food (NO, I am not pregnant… just hungry, evidently), so we just missed seeing Chris take the gold medal in his 200 meter race, but we did see him and his teammates (the ‘Tosa Inferno’) run like the wind in the 4×200, taking silver, and Chris-the-speeding-bullet take gold again in the 100 meter dash.
This was the first time I’d made it to one of the big State Special Olympic events, and I’m just now picking up my jaw off the floor. These are some stellar athletes, people! Chris ran his 100 m. in less than 15 seconds, and his 4×200 split was 30 seconds. I suspect that a certain late-night-talk-show S.O. comment/slip-up might not have been made if a certain Mr. President had ever seen these athletes in action.
ANYWAY, we had a good time despite the rain and cold on Saturday. Bjørn and I even managed a run ourselves through a very lovely nature reserve right next to the hotel. Karel made it into the pool twice, made some new friends, and Grandma got her grandbaby fix, complete with poopy diapers.
